Expats of Brussels - #50 Yevgeniy (36), in Brusse Expats of Brussels - #50

Yevgeniy (36), in Brussels since 2017

β€œIt feels like life is a little bit more formal here, which also relates to the industry I work in. More formal in the way people dress, how they interact with each other and how much structure and order there is. There is less spontaneity than in the other places I lived before. It took me a while to get used to, but sometimes it is also nice to have this structure and know what to expect. When queuing up, I know it will be a straight line.

I am in the process of saying goodbye to the friends I made in the last few years. I never get attached to a place, but I do get attached to people. My favourite bar is my favourite because that is where I meet friends. There is an abundance of bars, restaurants, and places to see the sunset – but the people that are with you make the difference. And those will be the memories I take with me, when I pack my bags to return home.”

β€œI am returning home in a few weeks, and it makes me look back to all the memories I have made here over the past five years. The best memory by far is the birth of my daughter. We will always have a special connection to this place because of that. Apart from that, I cherish the friendships I made and my professional achievements.

Brussels was a natural destination for me. I specialise in European international relations and EU research funding programs, so Brussels is the place where all of that is happening. It has been in the works a long time, and my partner and I studied at the College of Europe in Bruges before moving here. It was always in the books for us.

It is a great place for foreigners because it is so international. Getting to know people is easy, because you do not have the barriers that exist in other places, where locals are not used to foreigners. Brussels is an international hub like London or New York – a bunch of people, coming together and learning how to live with each other.”
