In my first two years, I mainly went to the expat hotspots. It felt like it could be anywhere in the world, because of that international crowd. But then I slowly started getting to know more Belgians and discovered the culture, food, and politics. Now Belgium really starts to feel like a new home to me – but it took a while. I see my family about once a year. It is a bit hard to go back home – there are no direct flights, which makes for an exceedingly long travel via Lebanon. I would love to invite my family here, but at the moment that is too complicated due to politics and complicated visa procedures. Expats of Brussels - #41 Laila (32), from Syria, Expats of Brussels - #41 Laila (32), from Syria, in Brussels since 2018 “Belgium is not really known outside of Europe – I only knew about chocolate, waffles, beer, and Tomorrowland. I did not plan to move here, but a job opening that matched my skills changed that. The process from application until relocation took an awfully long time, because of the war in Syria and subsequent sanctions. Overall, it took me about seven months to get all of the paperwork in order – a long journey, but an interesting one. I work as a software engineering manager in Ghent and teach at a college in Antwerp. I love living in Brussels, but eventually it might be easier to move to one of the other two cities. At the moment, I am more drawn to Antwerp as it feels more international, whereas Ghent feels more like a student city. Working in a Belgian company, with the majority of the employees being Flemish and only a handful of foreigners, I quickly noticed differences on the work floor. I like the structure, the streamlined processes, and the time management. It is an efficient work culture, that at the same time is understanding and accepting. People are open and self-aware and pay attention to tiny details. It is also a flat hierarchy, in which it is easy to reach higher ups. Even the founder and the CEO are approachable, they make time for you. Managers are here to guide you, help you improve your skills – not to boss you around."
